TRAINING IN AUROVILLE

Auroville is one of the few places in India where interesting architectural research and experimentation is carried out. Established as an international community through the vision of the 'Mother', Auroville has attracted a lot of architects, both from India as well as foreigners, who have shown a new direction to architecture in India. A lot of work on sustainable principles wherre carried out, right from its inception, before 'sustainable' became a focus for the world and before 'green' became a fashion statement. Lots of experimentation and research were carried out in the use of building materials, alternate materials, sustainable building technologies, ecologically sensitive development, energy systems and so on, which continue till date. The 'Utopia' that is Auroville is a great place to learn architecture for any student & also a place which will make you see things in a different perspective

This is a list of the good firms practising in Auroville where one can apply for training. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but a compilation of a few of the good practices.....

1.Ar.Satprem Maine -

His practice is the one renowned for Earth architecture

Type of exposure - One gets to learn earth architecture, including manufacture & usage of CSEB blocks, rammed earth construction, Cob etc. and also designing of vaults, domes & arches.

Phone -   2132623064

2.Ar.Anupama Kundoo -

As her own website say, 'An innovative approach to architecture is supported by intensive research and experimentation from the development of building technologies and integration of energy and water-efficient infrastructure solutions to building prototypes that are environmentally sound and socio-economically beneficial.'

3.Dharmesh Jadeja -

His practice varies from architecture, interior design & landscape to product design, calligarphy, graphics, architectural ceramics & pottery.

His work deals with sustainable, eco-friendly practices using climatically appropriate, energy efficient & cost effective building materials and incorporating arts & crafts to create a holistic environment.

4.Ar.Helmut -

He is one of the senior Aurovillians & is very knowledgeable. He has a small but very good architectural practice.

Contact - 0413-2622149

5.Ar.Suhasini Iyer -

As her profile on the Auroville webpage says, 'For ten years I worshiped at the altar of the god of ecology, sustainable materials, appropriate technologies and materials, climatic design, alternative energies and water conservation and waste water recycling. A whole series of projects and designs were done taking into account the available labour resource and skills, till one realised that this is all common sense and it cannot compensate or replace the urge to indulge in pure design.
Now my way of looking at design and architecture is that it is  an active collaboration between the people involved - the potential users, the builder, the site, the climate, the culture and the architect. It is like a choreography that takes a life of its own, that you can only mould with your preference, experience, skills and available opportunities

6.Mona & Popo Pingel -

Mona & Popo Pingel have a practice where they integrate principles of natural enegies like earth-energies, electro-magnectic fields etc. into their architecture(Baubiology). Landscaping forms an important feature of their practice which along with natural materials, indegenous plants, water bodies etc, create a harmonious sustainable environment.
