Is hand drawing or drafting knowledge enough for internships?

Well it's a no brainer really. While hand drawing skills are highly coveted in today's world, it is primarily used for designing and to a lesser extent for presenting your ideas to a third person.

However, in almost all the architecture firms, drafting of drawings is done using softwares. Drafting softwares helps one achieve increased speed, accuracy  and efficiency, which is highly necessary in today's competitive world. This would have a direct bearing on the profitability of the firm.

As an intern or a young architect, it is mandatory that you know how to draft using softwares, as otherwise, most of the firms will find it difficult to accommodate you.

So, if you are still not up to date with your drafting softwares, I suggest that you start immediately. Learning a software is very similar to driving. You get better and better as you do it more and more. So start immediately because that is something which has a direct bearing on your value.

Why is an architecture portfolio life changing?

Let's face it, an architecture portfolio is your most important document to get that coveted internship position, or that first job. It is the basis of your selection into a good firm, the single document based on which 90% of decisions are made.

Almost all architects make their decisions based on the quality of your portfolio. Most of the time, one doesn't get an opportunity to present your work directly. Thus, the value of a good portfolio can't be stressed enough.

Today, there is immense competition to get into the good firms of architecture for internships. Let me give you some numbers. As on February 2017, there are more than 500 architecture colleges in India. Now, assuming an average strength of 60 students per batch per college, that is a minimum of 30,000 students per batch in any given year. And that number is only going to go up as new colleges keep coming up daily. In such a situation, the competition for architecture internship positions in good firms is extremely intense.

The really good firms who are doing great work in India is again limited. So it is imperative that if one is serious about succeeding in his / her career, you have to get into these good firms for internships. This will mould you to be ready for the profession once you pass out and will make the search for the first job a lot more easier.

The firm in which you did your internship adds a lot of value in your resume. It conveys that you were good enough to get in there in the first place and that you've been trained well and will add a lot of weightage to any job that you are applying for. And the learnings will be incremental. You will grow up as a person and not just improve technically.

So give your best shot at preparing a good portfolio, one that will be compelling enough to get you that coveted internship position.

Is hand sketching relevant?

Hand sketching is still relevant for architects and student architects. It is a tool to record and explore ideas,to quickly translate them onto paper, directly from one's mind. That process, in spite of all the advances in softwares is still best done using one's hands.

Student architects should focus on developing their hand drawing skills as much as possible, as along with software proficiency, sketching is equally, if not more important.

And it shouldn't be confused with artistic drawing. Architecture sketching is completely different from making pretty pictures. It has more to do with developing ideas, which can be developed further and fine tuned.

The ability to sketch is an important skill which most of the good architects would appreciate while shortlisting candidates for internships and even jobs. So keep improving  your sketching abilities and confidently add those wonderful sketches to your portfolios.

Louvre Abu Dhabi by Jean Nouvel

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is one of the most interesting museums completed recently. Simple detailing and wonderfully executed. Elegant colour scheme and play with materials creates spaces which are simple, yet refined. Light is modulated through an interesting skylight design, which lets in filtered diffused light which is apt for a museum. The scale is monumental, also to accommodate the large sculptures and installations. Overall it is a space which does not try to be over bearing but one which creates a wonderful setting for the art on display, which can also be considered as an art in itself.

Padmanabhapuram Palace in the rains - Part 1 by Sujith.G.S

Padmanabhapuram palace complex is the quintessential example of the vernacular architecture of Kerala and was the abode of the Travancore Royal Family, before Maharajah Marthanda Varma shifted the capital to Trivandrum. The palace complex is a masterpiece - an intriguing play of volumes, scale, spatial planning & courtyards, all of which have a strong underlying cohesiveness. The spaces move from the public spaces on the periphery to the more private spaces as one moves towards the core, reflected through variations in scale & proportion, producing very interesting spaces

I had the good fortune of visiting the Palace complex last week and was greeted by ominous dark grey clouds in the background. I didnt want it to rain, but the skies soon opened up as we were exploring the complex.

And it turned out to be quite an unexpected spectacle. The whole space transforms in the rains. The results are most evident in the spectacular courtyards, where it is a literal waterfall. The sound and feel of the rain transforms the space, adding an additional dimension. Do check out the below pictures. Will come back with much more in Part 2
